Does Google Hate Guest Blogging?

Guest blogging is a common way to get exposure in a niche, to build better connections with other bloggers, and to get backlinks to your own blog.

But…does Google hate Guest Blogging?

But will the backlinks from your guest posts on other sites come back to haunt you when Google’s next algorithm change hits? Will your site get penalized because it sees you as “gaming the system”?

Let’s check in with Google’s Matt Cutts, the prominent member of their anti-spam team (the team that tinkers with Google’s famous (or infamous) algorithms to fight people who try to game the system).

So the answer is….NO!

Google loves quality content, whether it’s on your blog or someone else’s blog. You deserve that backlink for the effort you put into it!

Google Hates Extremes

Google hates excessive amounts of low value content, such as duplicate blog posts on multiple sites or “spun” content. It hates what I call “filler” posts – posts created only for the purpose of using some attractive buzzwords and playing host to a link with keyword-rich anchor text pointing back to the low-quality blogger’s site. These sub-par blog posts often look like they have potential, but end up disappointing the reader.

Want to know something interesting? I started as a guest blogger BEFORE I set up my own blog. This may not have been the conventional way, but guest blogging has taught me a lot. I learned that when writing for another site, one is far more careful and more strict with the article in terms of content quality and suitability to the overall theme of the blog. I improved a lot as a writer, enough so that I took the plunge and launched my own social media blog. When I get approached by a young talent looking to guest blog,… Read more »

Jason,
That’s a great story of going from writing on other people’s blogs to writing on your own. It’s great that you had the guts to do your first posts elsewhere. My first posts were definitely my worst posts!

I agree with what you picked up. I also learned to be a better blogger because of other blogs’ requirements and style guides. Thanks for stopping by to comment!

Oh, my first posts were terrible as well! 😛 But you know what, nothing ever great came out of an overnight effort, right? 🙂 I’m going to continue reading articles like yours, teaching whatever I know to new bloggers, and continually grow as both a writer and a social media nut! Thanks for the reply, sir.

Nice post Tom. Matt did a great job in the video of explaining Google’s view on guest blogging and you did a good job of recapping it. I’m glad to know that quality guest blogging does still help. 🙂

Tom,

Thanks for sharing the Matt Cutts video… When I read the title of this article I got very nervous that I had missed some update and all the Guest Blog Posts I’d done up to now were going to hurt me…

Also I finished the Guest Post I owe you and will have that over very soon.

Thanks buddy

Hanley

Thanks Ryan – I appreciate your comment! I would love to have your guest blog on the site. You’re a great writer and have a lot to say. If you want to include a word art picture I’ll include that too… let me know!

I love how Cutts is rather vague in all his videos and NEVER gives a definite yes or no on any given topic or question. However as with any online content practice or method, there will always be those who skirt the law so to speak.

My view is that guest blogging is indeed a smart practice for site and blog owners and if used properly, can yield all sorts of good results. Think beyond links though – go ALSO after community, exposure and traffic.

Thanks for sharing, Tom.

Cheers!

Missy,

Yes, he tends not to speak in absolutes. Always keep everyone guessing a bit. Great points you make – thanks for adding to the discussion!

Hi fellow tribemate!
I also started guest blogging by accident, and started to notice how my rankings were increasing. We now use it all the time for our SEO clients as a very safe white hat method of link building. I’m going to check out the links you mentioned and send them over to my team. Many thanks!

Hey Claire and welcome. Yes, it is a very safe white hat method and has been great for my visibility and link building as well. I hope you like the articles behind the links and thanks for dropping by!

OMG!! I was seriously taken aback by reading your post title, until i read further. I have been doing guest blogging quite assiduously on top blogs ever since i created my blog. My view is – If Google ever decides on penalizing guest bloggers, then it would penalize only those involved in distributing duplicate, spun and low quality articles for obtaining cheap back-links!

Tom

Agreed Abhishek. Sorry to scare you with the headline!

Guest Blogging is one of the best ways to garner links in the atrocious world of SEO as of now. If done correctly, it improve and benefits the users as well as the blogger. Its a win win situation for both.

Yes as a guest blogger I have did a lot of guest blogging 😉 and it really works. Basically guest blogging is a way that helps you in generating leads and quality links on other niche websites.

And no doubt, if your content is tasty and engaging you will surely deserve a positive result from it. 🙂
