365 Days of Minimalism Later: An Evening With The Minimalists

I took the opportunity to go up to San Francisco to meet the Minimalists as part of their National Meetup Tour (I live about 20 minutes away). Josh and Ryan are great guys – I had met them before when I interviewed them as part of the Business Blogging Telesummit. It also happens to be the “birthday” of the Minimalists – 365 days after they first starting de-cluttering their lives and telling people about it via their blog and books. They’ve left their 6-figure jobs and are loving their freedom and success as bloggers, writers and champions of austerity.

What Makes Them Stand Out?

You may wonder – what’s the big deal about the Minimalists? Why are people so interested in their opinions, their tips, their new way of life? The big deal is that they stand out in a world where most of us are collecting more gadgets, pushing for more stuff, and angling for a bigger salary to support our “habits”. They’re zigging when most of us are zagging and they’re letting people know about it – head on and without apology!

In the blogging and ebook “business”, where the cost of inventory is free and they face stiff competition, they’ve differentiated themselves. If your business or organization is using content to attract an audience, you also need to differentiate your message to survive (and not just in a cosmetic way – you need to own it!).

Happy Birthday Minimalists!

Keep the fresh messages coming and see you next year! Minimal enough guys?
